This painting is of the old Spanish fort located in St. Augustine, Florida. The city of St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish, and one of the most enduring legacies is the Spanish fort, now called Castillo de san Marcos, but also known as Fort Marion. The Spanish fort is located at the edge of St. Augustine, and sits on the Matanzas River, built to protect the Colonial Spanish citizens of St. Augustine. The painting is by St. Augustine artist Mary Hubley.
I've been painting the coast since I could first hold a crayon at my Grandmother's beach hotel in Ocean City, New Jersey. I grew up with an artist mother and a father who went fishing on his boat every weekend. I worked for many years in the corporate world as an editor and illustrator. Now I spend most of my time painting around the marshes and sandy locales on my Florida island. I'm an award-winning artist and sell my work online and through several prominent galleries.
